Some old, some new, some happy, some blue…

Plaits
Listening to the tide
plaiting plankton in seagrass,
listening to Dolly, Linda, and Emmy Lou
plaiting harmonies of lament,
I remember Great Grandma’s plait,
like a halo protecting her from
accidents in the fields and in the barnyard.
With this antiqued word for braid,
I can imagine her imaginings__
with each pull of a hair pin, each
stroke of the brush, she frees her plait
in an evening ritual as unique
as the Trio’s harmonies,
as current as the tide.

Which Am I — the Tortoise or Hare?

Unable to leap from here to there,

I draw my energy from the hare,

then set upon the tortoise round,

choose three or four things to hold my ground,

my family, the Word, the world, its laughter

and keep on moving toward the hereafter.

Which am I — the hare or the tortoise?

Move too fast, and you’ll never notice.
